When you live in any state, it’s easy to get caught up in your daily routine and forget how many opportunities are all around you, and your home state of Washington is no exception. When’s the last time you traveled to the top of the space needle in Seattle, treated yourself to dinner at one of the city’s world-famous restaurants, caught a local band, or visited a performing arts show downtown? When’s the last time you’ve been shopping in Bellevue? Or better yet, when is the last time you took up a new outdoor hobby? Don’t forget that people travel from all over the world to experience the beauty of your state: the green valleys, the rolling hills, the snow-capped peaks, the gorgeous gorges, and its sandy beaches. Did you know Washington has over 120 state parks? Did you know that Washington is a hotspot for hiking, camping, boating, windsurfing, snow sports, and mountain biking? Whatever your answers, be thankful you live in such a diverse state, and get out and do something different—today! |

| All About Alaska |
When I think of Alaska I think of a cold barren place with lots of ice and snow, and maybe some igloos. Apparently there is more to Alaska than I thought. Located in the upper northwest region of the North American continent, Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area (larger than the combined area of the next 3 largest states: Texas, California, and Montana) and one of the wealthiest and most racially diverse. Go figure! Alaska is actually quite a beautiful place with 17 of the top 20 highest peaks in the United States. The icy state also boasts natural wonders like the Yukon River, the third longest river in the U.S. and glaciers like Malaspina the largest in the state. According to the official state website there are three big misconceptions about Alaska. Weather is the #1 misconception. Over a third of all vacation/pleasure visitors found the weather better than expected. During the summer, average daytime temperatures throughout the state range from the 60s to the 90s. Road conditions are usually better than expected. Almost the entire length of the Alaska Highway is asphalt-surfaced, and approximately half of the roads in the state’s highway system are paved. The third misconception is price. Contrary to popular belief, prices throughout Alaska are generally quite reasonable. Who knew Alaska could be so pleasant? Next time, I take a vacation I just go to Alaska. It sure sounds a like a great place with plenty of natural wonders to take in.

| Washington is a beautiful state that sports an amazing coastline, green valleys, rolling hills, and mountains galore. It shares a border with a foreign country, our friendly, northern neighbor, Canada. And it has plenty of diversity: a thriving cultural and artistic element, vibrant music scenes, plenty of outdoor recreation, specialty shopping, mouth-watering cuisine, and of course, plenty of coffee shops. It’s also home to one of the most interesting and intellectual cities in the Unites States, Seattle. Many describe it as big city living with a small city’s pace and friendly neighborhood atmosphere. Here you’ll find the famous space needle, the original Starbuck’s, and the original home to grunge music, as well as many up-and-coming bands. Not far from Seattle, on the other side of picturesque Lake Washington, is Bellevue, an exciting, growing city that boasts one of the largest shopping centers in the region, Bellevue Square. Here you’ll find tantalizing restaurants and upscale shops with new additions like “The Lodge,” One Lincoln Tower, and the Bravern. Another popular spot is the Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art, which houses over a thousand dolls. And for kids, the new KidsQuest Children’s Museum, contains 10,000 square feet of play space. Other attractions include the famous Washington and Evergreen Point floating bridges. Recreational opportunities include walks on its sandy beaches or a visit to one of its over 120 state parks, hiking, camping, boating or windsurfing in Puget Sound, and snow-based sports, or simply taking in the beauty of Columbia River Gorge.
